Abstract

Tungstic acid is prepared by acidifying alkali metal tungstate solution in two stages, the first to a pH of 4-6 whereby impurities are precipitated and filtered off, and the second to a hydrogen ion concentration of at least 1 gm. equiv. per litre whereby tungstic acid is precipitated. Each stage may be effected by feeding acid and tungstate solution simultaneously into a reaction vessel at such rates that the resultant mixture has the required acidity. Any strong acid may be used. In the example, sodium tungstate solution, obtained by extraction of wolframite ore with NaOH solution, is acidified with 30% HCl to a pH of 5, filtered, and further acidified to a hydrogen ion concentration of 1.5 equiv/l. The tungstic acid is filtered, washed with 0.1 N HNO3, and dried at 120 DEG C. The final product contains less than 0.001% SiO2.
