Abstract

1,215,354. Separation of radio-isotopes. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 1 Feb., 1968, No. 5157/68. Heading G6R. Radioactive indium 113m is produced by forming a solution of neutron-irradiated tincontaining material, diluting the solution with water, depositing the tin on silica gel, and eluting indium 113m as required with dilute acid. The material irradiated may be metallic tin, tin oxide, nitrate, or sulphate, or tetraphenyl tin. Irradiated tin metal enriched in Sn 112 is dissolved in concentrated HCl in the presence of H 2 O 2 , bromine water, or permanganate as an oxidizing agent and the solution diluted with water; silica gel is added and the mixture allowed to stand at room or elevated temperature; the gel is then drained in a column and washed. Indium 113m is eluted from the column with dilute HCl and may be used in medical research and diagnosis.
