Abstract

1,207,246. Separation of radio-isotopes. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 16 April, 1968 [16 June, 1967], No. 17816/68. Heading G6R. Radio-active technetium 99m is separated from a solution of molybdenum 99 by forming a slurry of the solution with an oxidized zirconium compound, adjusting the pH of the slurry to 2 to 7, heating to above 40‹ C., and selectively extracting Tc 99m from the slurry solids with a solvent. The radio-active Mo 99 solution may be obtained from neutronirradiated molybdenum trioxide, nitrate, sulphate, or acetylacetone, or molybdenum metal. The solution is mixed with a slurry of hydrous zirconium oxide which has been oxidized with bromine or chlorine water, potassium permanganate or chlorate, hydrogen peroxide, or benzoyl peroxide. The slurry is drained in a column, washed, and Tc 99m eluted with isotonic saline, methyl ethyl ketone, or an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid. If the column and isotonic saline are sterilized, solutions suitable for medical use are obtained.
