Abstract
1,204,300. Utilizing energy of radiations. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 4 July, 1969 [9 Aug., 1968], No. 33728/69. Heading G6P. In a radioisotopic heat source, thulium oxide rods are used, comprising 169 Tm 2 O 3 , and are irradiated in a thermal-epithermal reaction flux. During irradiation, 170 Tm 2 O 3 is formed which has a half-life of four months and a part epithermal flux is employed, owing to the high thermal-neutron cross-section of thulium, so as to facilitate neutron penetration of the rods. The thulium oxide rods, 11, are mounted in the heat exchange medium 13, formed of compacted tungsten powder, from which heat is extracted through the coolant tubes 17 by a coolant, e.g. water or helium.
