Abstract

1,148,549. Utilizing energy of radiations. SANDERS NUCLEAR CORP. 24 Nov., 1967 [20 March, 1967], No. 53676/67. Heading G6P. In a radioisotope thermal power source a mixture thulium 170 and 171 is sealed within a molybdenum case. A mixture of powdered thulium 169 metal and thulium oxide 169 is compressed and sintered and then sealed by electron beam welding in the molybdenum case. The source is then neutron irradiated in a nuclear reactor to produce both thulium 170 and 171. The presence of the metal component raises the thermal conductivity of the material.
