Abstract
1289940 Radio-active sources UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 2 July 1971 [29 July 1970] 31090/71 Heading G6R A radioisotope fuel capsule for use as a heat source in a thermoelectric or thermionic generator comprises a sealed container enclosing substoichiometric plutonium oxide having an oxygen to plutonium atomic ratio of 1À6 to 1À98. The container may be made of a refractory metal, e.g. Ti, Nb, Re, W, Hf, V, Zr, Ni, Ti, and alloys thereof. The plutonium oxide may be in the form of particles or powder or a sintered pellet and may be prepared in the container by mixing PuO 2 particles with an oxygen-gettering metal, e.g. Y, Ta, Ce, Ti, U, Th, Nb, Pu, or rare earths, in an oxygen-free atmosphere, and sealing and heating the container. Corrosion of the container is reduced in use at above 500 C.
