Abstract

989,393. Fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 7, 1963 [Nov. 20, 1962], No. 43818/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading G6C. A sheathed nuclear reactor fuel element is provided with an inert gas atmosphere, within the sheath, to provide an indication of sheath leakage. A clathrate compound is used to contain the gas and is placed inside the sheath prior to scaling. After scaling, the fuel element is heated, and the inert gas is released from the clathrate compound into the free space inside the sheath. The inert gas may be either helium or radio-active krypton 85. The clathrate compound may be quinol and can be introduced into the fuel element by incorporation with heat insulating discs. Specifications 843,838, 897,232 and 989,392 are referred to.
