919,191. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 7, 1960 [June 26, 1959], No. 21952/59. Class 39 (4). A nuclear fuel element comprises a ceramic nuclear fuel member provided with an adherent coating of non-fissile metallic material and enclosed in a protective sheath, the dimensions of the sheath being such that it is brought into thermal contact with the metallic coating in an operating nuclear reactor and heat generated in the fuel is conducted more easily to the sheath. Uranium dioxide fuel may be coated with beryllium and enclosed in a beryllium sheath; alternatively the coating may be of nickel and the sheath of stainless steel.
