818,776. Nuclear reactors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 21, 1957 [May 24, 1956], No. 16116/56. Class 39(4). To prevent a reactor, particularly a materials testing reactor, from running away under fault conditions, "safety" material having a neutron capture cross-section which increases rapidly with increase in temperature is added to the moderator, fissile material or the material of fuel element cans. Samarium is the proposed safety material and the quantity required is of the order of 0À025 per cent. by weight of the U235 fuel with which it is mixed in the fuel element.
