Abstract

889,702 Reactor-control rods. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A. G. March 21, 1960 [March 21, 1959], No. 10006/60. Class 39(4) A reactor control member comprises a neutron-absorbing member 2 covered by a further member 1, and means for effecting relative movement of the members; the member 2 has absorbing zones 4 alternating with non- absorbing zones, and the member 1 has zones 7 of fissile or reflecting material alternating with zones free of such material, and the zones in the two rods have the same pitch. Fig. 2 shows the member in its condition of greatest absorption; the absorber zones are level with zones 6 which are empty or contain moderator. To reduce absorption the member 2 is moved so that the absorber zones are shielded by the zones of fissile or reflecting material, which are longer than the absorber zones. The zones of absorber, which may be Cd, may be separated by moderator; the moderator zones of the member 1 may be pierced or replaced by struts. The members may have any crosssection: cylindrical or prismatic for 1, round, rectangular, annular or cruciform for 2.
