Abstract

856,054. Nuclear reactors. DIEBNER, K. Sept. 12, 1957 [Sept. 19, 1956 ; Dec. 6, 1956], No. 28750/57. Class 39(4). A reactor for breeding plutonium comprises a central core and a blanket of natural uranium and a moderator surrounding and spaced from the core so that the neutron multiplication factor for the blanket lies between 0À5 and 1, the spacing and geometry of the inner surface of the blanket being such that neutron loss and recapture by the core is reduced to such an extent that the conversion factor for the production of plutonium in the blanket exceeds unity. As shown in Fig. 2 the reactor core I may be separated from the blanket III by a space II filled with air or other suitable gas such as beryllium acetate. The coolant system A of the core and B of the blanket and the space II may be connected to a pressure-equalizing reservoir IV to prevent any pressure differences in the three zones. The blanket may comprise uranium rods immersed in water or other moderator material.
