In a boiling water reactor the control means are connected to a device for controlling the demand for steam in an associated power plant and to a device sensitive to the steam pressure supplied to the plant. Reactivity is increased when demand rises or pressure falls, but is reduced before demand falls or pressure rises. Control means include: fuel or moderator rods of variable separation; circulating through tubes a moderator or enriched fuel; vibrating fuel rods or coolant; variable steam and water separators, combined with movable fuel, moderator, or control rods or with the addition of enriched liquid fuel.
