Abstract

1,100,767. Controlling reactors. SOCIETE ANGLO-BELGE VULCAIN SOC. ANON. 12 Aug., 1965 [27 Aug., 1964], No. 34517/65. Heading G6C. A pressurized water reactor having a core 22 within the pressure vessel 21 is controlled by varying the quantity of boric acid in the main coolant circuit by means of a valve 32. In the closed position of the valve the boric acid does not enter the main circuit but flows in a closed circuit comprising a boiler 24 fed with water from a pressurizer 23 by means of a conduit 27. The boric acid enters the conduit 28 in the form of a vapour entrained in the vapour of the boiling water and passes to a column 25 where it is washed by water from an atomizer 29, the water charged with the boric acid returning to the boiler 24 via a conduit 30 and a conduit 33 extending from the top of an intermediate chamber 26. By opening the valve 32 a desired quantity of water charged with boric acid passes through the conduit 31 and is introduced into the main coolant circuit. Impurities are removed through a valve 34.
