Abstract

856,946. Nuclear reactors. WALTHER & CIE A.G. Jan. 16, 1958 [Jan. 18, 1957], No. 1528/58. Class 39(4). In a fast breeder power reactor liquid fissile material 1 in a vessel 2 is continuously withdrawn at a small rate through a pipe 15 purified, and then returned through a pipe 16. Similarly, liquid fertile material 9 in a surrounding chamber 8 is withdrawn through a pipe 17, replaced by fresh fertile material, and returned through a pipe 18. Coolant in the form of a liquid metal or salt is forced by a pump 5 from a tank 4 through pipes 3 in the vessel 2 and thence through pipes 7 to a heat exchanger, the coolant also flowing through branch pipes 12 to tanks 11 and pipes 10 in the chamber 8. Control may be effected by displacing control rods inside the reactor or plates containing neutron absorbing material on the outside wall of the vessel 2 or, alternatively, by changing the level of the fissile material in the vessel. The shield 14 may act as a reflector or neutron absorber.
