Abstract

849,308. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 12, 1958 [Sept. 19, 1957], No. 29473/57. Class 39(4). A high pressure carbon dioxide cooled reactor 1 has heavy water moderator 4 contained within an aluminium tank 2 pierced by tubes 18 accommodating the fuel elements, the coolant gas flowing through pipes 8, 9 and a heat exchanger 6. The moderator 4 is pressurized to equal the gas pressure by a gas pipe 12 tapped from the pipe 9 and leading through a pipe 11 to a gas/moderator interface 10. To prevent an excessive amount of carbon dioxide being dissolved in the heavy water at the interface the interfacial temperature is reduced to 5-15‹C. by cooling coils 13. Decomposition products of deuterium and oxygen which escape at the interface 10 are circulated in a closed circuit 14 including a pump 16 and recombination unit 15, the recombined heavy water being returned to the tank 2 through a valve 17.
