Abstract

862,624. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 16, 1959 [July 9, 1958], No. 22022/58. Class 39(4). In a gas cooled nuclear reactor, the core and heat exchangers are contained within a concrete biological shield, which together with the fuel handling machine, are surrounded by an outer housing. As shown, Fig. 1, the core 1, inside pressure vessel 2 and heat exchangers 7 are surrounded by the biological shield 3, 12. The refuelling machine 9 is mounted outside the shield and the whole surrounded by the gas-tight steel building 10: A break in the coolant circuit results in an increase in pressure in the space 14 and expansion occurs, through pipe 22, into the gasholder 21 through the heat sink pit 20. Leakage through the shield 12, into operating space 11, is contained in 10 and may be released to 21 through valve 25 if at too high a level of activity. The contents of 21 may be treated in the absorption tower 29 with caustic soda. Specification 781,648 is referred to.
