Abstract

897,443. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 27, 1959 [March 13, 1958], No. 8171/58. Class ,39(4). Part of a reactor containment vessel is internally shielded from the core so that the vessel can be opened without excessive delay. Fig. 1 shows a pressure vessel I containing a graphite core 6, a shield 10, and a heat exchanger 11. A shield 33 closes the vessel and protects the weld at 16 so that the weld can be broken and the contents of the vessel removed as one in the cylinder 9. The shields are of layers of graphite and mild or boron steel. The shield 10 is suspended from a grid 56; the vessel and the core grid are carried by angle brackets. A gas seal 17, thermal shield 4, biological shield 3 and blower 51 are provided. Fuel elements 48 are supported by struts 49 and cylindrical plugs 38. Each plug has a channel containing a push rod 44 for charging and discharging, Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (not shown). Another reactor, Fig. 5, has a shield 111 above the core to protect the top of the vessel. The top of the vessel can then be removed and the vessel partly filled with water while coolant and fuel pipes are removed so that the core can be worked on or dismantled.
