Abstract

781,648. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 21, 1954 [July 23, 1953], No. 20541/53. Class 39(4). In a natural uranium fuelled carbon dioxide cooled nuclear reactor, the graphite block moderator 1 is enclosed in a cobalt steel pressure vessel 2 which is surrounded by an outer biological shield 35 consisting of concrete six feet thick, a side thermal shield of cement blocks cased in “ inch steel 34, a top and bottom thermal shield of 4 inch mild steel 20. The fuel elements 12 and control rods 23 are moved vertically into cylindrical apertures in the graphite block, by electric motors, through holes 18 in the shielding upper surface 19. The fuel elements are enclosed in a magnesium beryllium alloy. The control rods are formed of boron steel tube graphite filled. The carbon dioxide coolant passes vertically upwards from the inlets 14, through the fuel apertures in the moderator block, through outlets 15 at the top of the pressure vessel, to the heat exchangers. The fuel element 12, Fig. 3a, is inserted into or removed from the pressure vessel 2 by the cable 45 wound by a motor in flask 27. The access tube 18 has an extension 48 fitted with a valve 49 and a gate 50 to absorb radiation. The flask 27 is sealed to a flange 51 by sealing ring 52. The slide 53 closes the base of the flask. The control rods attached to cable 37 are moved by the electric drive unit 67 and the down speed is ten times the up speed. The unit 67 permits release of the rods for a free gravity drop. A filter to trap fission products is incorporated in the coolant system and a faulty fuel element is detected by feeding gas samples over a wire on which solid decay products are deposited and which is fed through a counter tube.
