1507039 Nuclear reactors WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 31 Oct 1975 [30 Dec 1974] 45443/75 Heading G6C In a nuclear reactor, for example a liquid metal-cooled fast breeder reactor, fuel elements 66 are supported on inlet units 52 through which coolant passes into the reactor core; the units extend through support plate 40 and at least some of the units include containers 112 made of high temperature resistant material for the collection or core debris resulting from melting of the core in the event of an accident. The containers 112 may be made of stainless steel, refractory metal, or ceramic material, or of an inner ceramic layer and an outer metallic layer; a layer of unenriched UO 2 may also be included in the container wall. Each unit 52 may include a number of receptacles 74 for supporting fuel elements, control rod ducts, and other peripheral assemblies. In normal use, coolant flows into the units at 104; some coolant passes through receptacles 74 into the peripheral assemblies, and some is by-passed through pipe 96 to enter receptacles 74 or 78 and flow upwardly through the fuel elements. In the event of melting of the core, debris will collect and be cooled in containers 112 without damage to the support plate 40.
