Abstract

In a pressurized water cooled reactor, the core is mounted within a cylindrical shroud which is spaced from the core and which rests on the core support plate, thereby confining the coolant flow to the core. The core shroud 30 surrounds the fuel assemblies, 18, which are supported by the plates 17, 19. The core support plate, 15, is carried by the core support barrel 13 which rests on the rim 14 on the reactor vessel, 11. The thermal shield, 23, is interposed between 13 and 11. Coolant flows down through space 27 and then upwards through 15, 17 and the fuel assemblies 18. The shroud 30 is formed of vertical plates 31 strengthened by annular plates 32.
