Abstract

1,096,026. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 26, 1964 [Nov. 11, 1963], No. 44462/63. Heading G6C. In a fast nuclear reactor the fuel elements are mounted in vertical open-ended tubes, the upper ends of which are welded together to form a support closure surface which rests on the upper rim of the core tank. Each fuel element hangs from a shield plug which rests in the tube upper opening and neutron shields are supported both above and below each fuel element. Liquid metal coolant is admitted to and passes from core through coaxial ducting. The coolant passes down the thermal shield outer surface, flows vertically upwards through the reactor base, along the tubes. The coolant leaves the tubes laterally through apertures leading to the outlet duct. There is provision for monitoring the coolant.
