Abstract

965,887. Nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 1, 1963 [June 29, 1962], No. 26005/63. Heading G5C. An arrangement for irradiating specimens in a nuclear reactor comprises an L-shaped support which is movable vertically with respect to the reactor, the free end of the horizontal hand of the support being adapted to support a vertically slidable sealed tubular casing containing the specimens. In the drawing the vertical part of the support 2 is movable vertically by means not shown, and the horizontal part forms a sealed housing closed by a removable cover 3. The free end 2a of the support is extended downwardly by a sealed tube 5 provided at its lower end with a centring piece 5a adapted to engage the lower grid of a swimming pool type of nuclear reactor. The tubular casing 1 within the tube 5 contains the specimens and is closed at its upper end by a removable cover 9. Leads 10 from instruments and as thermocouples pass through the cover 9 to a junction box 12 from which leads 13 pass through the vertical part of the support 2. A coolant may be insulated through the space between casing 1 and tube 5 from an inlet 7 to an outlet 8. When it is desired to withdraw specimens from the casing 1 the support 2 is raised until the cover 3 in above the water level of the reactor, as shown by the dotted lines, and the cover is removed. The cover 9 of the casing 1 can then be removed to give access to the specimens, or the casing 1 may be removed and replaced.
