Abstract

874,282. Nuclear reactors; handling nuclear fuel elements. BETEILIGUNGS - UND PATENVERWALTUNG-GESELLSCHAFT, and BROWN, BOVERI & CIE A.G. May 21, 1959 [May 22, 1958], No. 17330/59. Class 39(4). Spent fuel 3 is removed from the reactor core 2 by rotating a tubular elbow 7 about a horizontal axis so that the fuel drops through a shielding wall 11 on to a cooling pan 8, the fuel being discharged from the reactor through a shoot 10 by rotating an elbow 9 similarly to the elbow 7. The pan may be cooled by the cooling medium used in the reactor cooling system (not shown). Operation of the elbow 7 also permits the chain reaction to be rapidly stopped in an emergency. In a modified construction Fig. 2, the movable elbows 7, 9 are omitted and there is a permanent pipe connection 13 between the core 2 and pan 12, and the withdrawal of the fuel is controlled by a valve 15 in the outlet 14.
