Abstract
870,315. Nuclear reactors. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A. G. May 14, 1959 [May 14, 1958], No. 16592/59. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a liquid moderated reactor, thermal insulation is provided between the moderator and the coolant. A tube 2 immersed in moderator and containing a fuel rod 5 over which coolant flows is surrounded by a roll 1 of foils, the layers of foil being spaced apart by projections 3 and held together by hooks 4; the spaces between the layers are filled with moderator to provide thermal insulation, the spacing of the layers being such that heat cannot be transferred by convection in the spaces. At the ends of the tubes the foils are not sealed, so that a limited moderator flow is possible for cleansing. The foils are of Zr, Al or their alloys and are of the order of 0.1 mm. thick. The tank containing the moderator may also be insulated in a similar way. The foils may be slit for easy assembly.
