In a boiling water reactor vapour bubbles are prevented from adhering to the fuel rods by promoting the circulation of the water. As shown, the vertical fuel rods a, are supported within an open-ended jacket b. The jacket may be either rotated about its vertical axis to cause liquid flow by centrifugal action or shaped to produce a Venturi effect. The fuel rods may be eccentrically located in the jacket.
