Abstract

796,966. Nuclear reactors. PARSONS & CO., Ltd., C. A. Dec. 7, 1956 [Jan. 2, 1956], No. 83/56. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor of the kind comprising a number of ducts immersed in liquid and housing nuclear fuel, means are provided for assisting circulation of the liquid through the ducts over the fuel, these means comprising nozzles arranged at the inlets of one or more fuel ducts, through which nozzles a proportion of the liquid is injected into the ducts, a space for the flow of liquid being formed between each nozzle outlet and the wall of the duct associated with the nozzle. In the reactor shown in Fig. 2, ducts 2 house nuclear fuel and are immersed in water inside a vessel 1. A mixture of water and steam issues from the top of the ducts and the steam passes out through the duct 4 to be used for generating power whilst the water flows back through the annular space between the reactor vessel and the fuel ducts. After use the steam is condensed and returned to the reactor through the pipe 6. A circulating pump 7 withdraws water from the reactor and returns it through nozzles 10 situated at the inlet ends of the fuel ducts ; the water passing through the nozzles produces an injection effect and increases the natural circulation of water. In a modification, Fig. 3, (not shown), the circulating pump is supplied by the condensate instead of withdrawing water from the reactor vessel.
