Abstract
1,151,334. Reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 30 March, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 14467/66. Heading G6C. In order to prevent the release of radio-active material for a nuclear reactor in the event of an accident, the radio-active fluids are directed through the water of a refuelling tank so as to effect condensation of the fluids and a reduction of pressure. The heavy-water moderated reactor core is supported in the calandria, 12, beneath the refuelling pond 26, together with the steam drums 20, within the concrete pressure vessel 10. In the event of a fracture of pipe 19, pressure tube 16 or any other section of the reactor coolant circuit, water and steam which are released into space 31, flow through the spaces 28 and pond 26 into the upper space 32. Pressure is thus reduced by condensation in the pond. In addition, pond 26 serves as a radiation shield during refuelling, by machine 33, when plugs 35 are removed.
