Abstract

911,135. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 6, 1961 [June 14, 1960], No. 20816/60. Class 39 (4). In an organic liquid moderated and cooled reactor all shielding is contained within the pressure vessel and consists of steel sheeting and the organic liquid. In the ship-borne ractor shown, the core 14 is mounted within the pressure vessel 10 inside the containment chamber 51. An organic liquid moderatorcoolant fills 10, is circulated by pump 25 vertically upwards through 14 and downwards through the heat-exchangers and superheaters 21, 22 and between the concentric steel-shielding sheets 18, 45. No steel shielding is required above the core, due to the depth of the moderator in column 24. The fuel elements are held between the grids 15, 16, and are spring-loaded to withstand impacts transmitted from the ship's hull. The fuel consists of cylindrical pellets of sintered UO 2 and the control rods of 4% boron steel.
