Abstract
1,036,884. Reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Oct. 31, 1962 [Oct. 31, 1961], No. 38996/61. Heading G6C. In a carbon dioxide gas-cooled reactor the core is completely surrounded by a return shield formed of blocks of neutron-absorbing material enclosed in metal casing. The shield absorbs both fast neutrons and gamma radiation. A spherical pressure vessel surrounds the shield and heat exchangers are mounted between the pressure vessel and shield. The core support grid is carried by vertical columns which pass through the pressure vessel and rest on the floor of the biological shield which encloses the pressure vessel, flexible bellows being provided to permit relative movement of the pressure vessel and the core. The pressure vessel is suspended by slings from the biological shield. The coolant gas circulators are housed in bosses forming part of the pressure vessel and urge the gas vertically upwards through the core and downwards through the heat exchangers. Control of the coolant flow is effected by flap valves and the exchangers incorporate both economisers and superheaters. Coolant is extracted from the main circuit and passed through external filters to control the dust content. The floor of neutron shield may be formed as a hopper to permit removal of debris from the core.
