Abstract

Class 39(4) In a nuclear reactor, the reactivity is controlled by the relative displacement of fuel and absorbing elements. In the zero control position the control element is screened from the neutron flux by the fuel and after a relative displacement the control element is exposed to the flux to give maximum control. As shown, Fig. 1, the control element 5, 6, 7, 8 is movable along the axis of the fuel tubes 1, 2, 3, 4. In the position shown, 5, 6, 7, 8 are screened by 1, 2, 3, 4 and have a minimum antireactivity while when 5, 6, 7, 8 are moved so as to be intermediate between 1, 2, 3, 4 the exposure to the neutron flux, and therefore the control, is a maximum. In Fig. 2, the control elements, 9, 10 are rotatable about axis 11 so as to be either exposed to or shielded from the neutron flux by the fuel 12, 13. In Fig. 3 the control element 14 is fixed and the movable fuel elements 17, 18 control the exposure of the element to the neutron flux.
