Abstract
1,273,559. Cooling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 10 Oct., 1969 [8 Aug., 1968], No. 37850/68. Heading G6C. In a water cooled reactor, water is urged into the pressure vessel in the event of failure of the vessel, to prevent core overheating. Failure of the pressure vessel 1 produces a rise of pressure in the containment, 2 which opens valve 5. Water, 3, is urged into the vessel, 1, by a gravity and convection head. The duct 21, above the water level, acts as an overpressure release to protect the pressure vessel. The water column 7, provides a datum pressure for the valve 5 and prevents the escape of contaminated water or steam to the atmosphere.
