Abstract
1,098,599. Reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 25, 1965 [March 25, 1964], No. 12631/65. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor has, in a common pressure vessel, a core cooled by a pressurized coolant, a heat exchanger located downstream of the core for removing heat from the coolant, and an insulating wall which encircles the core and heat exchanger and co-operates with the pressure vessel wall to form an annular coolant passage for coolant which has left the heat exchanger; the insulating wall includes a neutron absorbing material which is released into the coolant to render the core sub-critical if the insulating wall is fractured. The insulating wall 26 comprises a porous ceramic filling clad on both sides by stainless steel; the top end is sealed, and the bottom end includes a thermal expansion compensation Unit 36 joining the inner and outer stainless steel claddings. The neutron absorbing material is contained in pockets 30, and is in fine granular form, readily soluble in the supercritical water coolant.
