Abstract
822,220. Nuclear reactors. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Jan. 8, 1958 [Jan. 10, 1957], No. 716/58. Class 39(4). A nuclear fuel element cooled by high pressure fluid comprises rods 1 of uranium or thorium contained in a thin pipe 8 and is located within a pressure-resisting pipe 3 of the reactor, there being a heatinsulating space between the rods 1 and the pipe 3. The coolant, CO 2 at 30-100 atmospheres pressure, flows in at 13, down between thin pipes 9 and 10 and up over the rods 1 within the pipe 8. The pipes 8, 9 are joined at one end only and thus contain stagnant coolant forming one heatinsulating space. The pipe 10 is provided with one or more fine holes so that the space between this pipe and the pipe 3 also contains stagnant coolant and forms a second heatinsulating space. In this way the pipe 3 can be of magnesium protected by a layer of aluminium 12 as the water moderator 5 with which it is in contact is maintained at a low temperature. The pipes 8, 9 and 10 are of steel but are thin and absorb few neutrons. Specification 754,183 is referred to.
