In a steam or liquid metal cooled fast breeder reactor, the core is shaped to reduce the probability of a reactivity increase induced by coolant loss, i.e. the coolant void effect. The core shape induces an increase in the neutron leakage at the core centre,where the maximum void effect occurs. Breeder blankets 3, 4 surround the core 1, 2 in the fissile material is uniformly enriched.
