Abstract
909,692. Shielded containers for radioactive material. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Feb. 20, 1961, No. 6222/61: Class 39 (4). A cask 10 for shipping spent fuel elements comprises a pressure vessel 11 having internal and external shielding 22, 32, the internal shielding 22 defining a rectangular section cavity 24 in which fuel elements 26 may be placed. After the elements have been loaded the vessel is filled with water to a level just above the top elements and a shielding plug 28 and pressure vessel head 20 are replaced, the heat from the elements generating steam under pressure. The cask 10 is loaded on to railroad truck and two heat exchangers 34 are attached, each exchanger comprising an inlet header 36 and an outlet header 38 interconnected by heat exchange tubes 40. Each header 36 is connected to the vessel 11 through a valve (Fig. 2, not shown), and pipe 42 and each header 38 is connected through a pipe 46 and valve 48, the steam passing through conduits 44 in the plug 28 and being condensed in the heat exchangers. The heat exchangers may be cooled by convection air currents, but preferably blower means (not shown) are provided. Baskets 54 of a neutron absorbing material may be provided in the pressure vessel to prevent critical conditions arising and facilitate handling the fuel elements or broken parts thereof.
