Class 39(4) In a nuclear reactor, the pressure vessel inner surface is thermally insulated by a cellular stainless steel panel bolted to the surface. As shown, Fig. 1, the panel is formed of a sheet 10, built of metal bands 11 welded at 12. The L-shaped extensions 13 have spacing limbs 16 and resilient sealing strips 14. Limbs 16 and transverse spacing strips 15 are fitted together to form compartments. The panel is urged against the inner surface 17 of reactor pressure vessel 18 by the plate 19. The latter is engaged by nuts on studs which are welded to the vessel and which project through the panel. The strips 14 engage 17 and 19 at 20. In further embodiments, not shown, the cellu- 1ar structure may be formed of corrugated metal sheet or metal sheets separated by spaced rods or tubes. Alternatively, a shallow closed egg-box structure may be formed with a thin metal sheet surface top and bottom to which resilient sealing strips are welded. In a further arrangement, the panel is formed of alternate layers of expanded metal separated by metal sheets. In this case the resilient sealing strips are mounted inside the panel so as to engage the internal metal sheets.
