Abstract

891,354. Reactor pressure vessels. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 3, 1959, No. 7568/59. Class 39(4) In a nuclear reactor, the pressure vessel inner surface is thermally insulated. Expanded metal between thin metal sheets, all of stainless steel, are formed as panels and are bolted against the pressure vessel surface. As shown, the expanded metal layers 23, 25 are spot welded to the sheets 21, 24, 27 at points 31. Sealing strips 28, 29 are welded between the plates and divide the space between the sheets into pockets of motionless fluid. A tubular insulating casing Fig. 3 (not shown), surrounds the fuel element charge nozzles penetrating the pressure vessel. Adjacent panels are separated by gaps, each gap being covered by a narrow length of the insulation bolted to the vessel. Each narrow length is spaced from the vessel by distance pieces surrounding the bolts. Specification 891,353 is referred to.
