Abstract
1480743 Sound insulation ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 21 Oct 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 50690/73 Heading F2X [Also in Divisions E1 and F1] A cellular sandwich structure forming, e.g. the wall of the jet pipe of a gas turbine jet propulsion engine 10, includes at least one cellular member sandwiched between first and second metal sheets of which the first sheet is formed by a number of pieces separated from each other or overlapped such that relative movement can occur between the pieces in any direction lying on the surface of the first sheet to compensate for different expansion rates of the first and second sheets owing to differing temperature changes of the two sheets. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, jet pipe 12 consists of an outer wall 16 and an inner wall 18 which is a sandwich structure composed of a perforate inner skin 20, a honeycomb member 24, and an outer skin 26 composed of a plurality of separate plates 26a. all these parts being of metal and welded together. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the inner skin is composed of overlapping separate plates 20a and the outer skin is continuous. Where the separate plates do not overlap, as in Fig. 2, resilient U-shaped straps may be secured between them to seal the gaps between them (Fig. 5, not shown).
