Abstract
936,539. Boiler casings; supporting thermal insulating material. NEWALLS INSULATION CO. Ltd. Aug. 9, 1962 [Aug. 1, 1961], No. 28789/61. Classes 64 (2) and 123 (2). A boiler or similar structure encircled by horizontal buckstays 2, 3 has its casing 1 covered with a layer of thermally-insulating material 13 which is provided with an outer protecting skin consisting of corrugated sheets 12 of e.g. aluminium, steel or reinforced plastic. Each buckstay is enclosed by a shroud 4 and the upper and lower edges of the sheets 12 are engaged in channels formed by the flanged ends of the upper and lower surfaces 6, 8 of the shrouds and by angle members 10, 11 spaced therefrom and secured to the surfaces 6, 8. The width of the channels is sufficient to accommodate the depth of corrugation of the sheets while the depth of the channels and the vertical distance between them is sufficient to allow for vertical expansion and contraction movements both of the boiler and of the sheets 12 so that at all times the latter remain free in the channels whilst being engaged between the sides of the channels. Where, as shown, the buckstays are of H-section an inverted channel member having vertical slots in its side walls spaced so as to fit the flanges of the buckstay may be used to support the buckstay shroud. The sheets 12, if large, may be additionally secured at the centre by cleading pins 14 welded to the boiler shell. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the buckstay is of inverted channel section and is not shrouded, a plate member is fixed to the inner flange of the buckstay and the protecting sheets are secured in channels formed in part by this plate and by further members attached thereto.
