Abstract
1,135,963. Carrying liquefied gases. J. J. McMULLEN. 14 March, 1966 [15 March, 1965; 16 March, 1965; 24 Sept., 1965], No. 11136/66. Heading B7A. [Also in Division F4] Spaced inner and outer walls 24, 22, Fig. 7, of a generally rectangular liquid methane tank at atmospheric pressure are reinforced by stress members 40 within the wall space designed to prevent relative movement of the walls due to thermal expansion, and each stress member comprises flat plates 42, 43 welded to opposite wall faces and connected together by a vertically extending web, e.g. overlapping plates 46, 48 bolted together. Both walls are corrugated, and vertically spaced horizontal girders 30, Fig. 4, project inwardly of inner wall 24 and each girder 30 has a flange 34 projecting into the wall space and bolted to a flange 32 projecting inwardly from the outer wall 22 and provided with manholes 38. Each of the upper and lower edges of the tank are reinforced by a box girder system 33, Fig. 6, comprising a vertical plate 56, an adjacent horizontal plate 30 and a plate 37 having legs 37, 39 and a rounded corner, and the box so-formed is reinforced by elbow plates 58, 60 normal to plates 30, 56, 37 and secured together at overlapping seams 43 to provide a manhole 45. Each vertical edge of the tank is formed by a vertical column 39 mounted on the junction of two box girders 33. The tank is divided by longitudinal and transverse bulkheads 26, 28, Fig. 3, and is supported on a plurality of spaced balsa wood pillars 17, Fig. 2, projecting upwardly from the bottom of the inner hull of a ship which also has a keyway 19 engaged by a key 18 secured to the bottom of the tank. The inner hull has a balsa wood lining 20. In a modification some of the horizontal plates 30 are connected to undulations 24, Fig. 10, of the inner wall by welded pipes 112, and the inner face of the inner and outer walls have welded plates 102 and sockets 108 in which are rotatably held the rounded ends 103 of a connecting arm 110.
