[Also in Group XXVIII] A ship for carrying liquefied gas has an inner hull 14, and a thermally insulating secondary container 24 within the inner hull. The secondary container 24, inside which are the primary containers 34 holding the liquid 35, is sealed from the atmosphere by an insulating cover 32. The closed space 38, between the inner hull 14 and the secondary container 24 is also sealed from the atmosphere and may be divided into several compartments. In order to detect leakage through the insulating container wall 24, the closed space 38 (or each compartment of the closed space) is connected to the insulated space 31 through the four way valve 48 and the pump 42, which produces a pressure differential between the two spaces. Any leak in wall 24 can be detected by observation of flowmeter 54 or pressure indicator 56. With valve 48 in the position shown, space 38 would be at a greater pressure than space 31 and leakage of gas from the secondary container would be stopped. With valve 48 in another position, space 38 would be at a lower pressure than space 31, which would encourage the cold gas to escape. The position of the leak would then be found by observing the localised formation of ice on inner hull 14. As an alternative, the pump may be replaced by a source of compressed inert gas, e.g. compressed nitrogen bottles.
