Abstract

1,248,419. Liquefied gas storage containers. MOTHERWELL BRIDGE ENG. Ltd. 9 Dec., 1969 [9 Dec., 1968], No. 58448/68. Heading F4P. In an insulated liquefied gas storage container comprising an outer shell 1 and an inner tank 2, boil-off gas from the inner tank is passed through the insulating layer before reaching the container outlet 10 to minimize external heat leakage. The insulating layer is situated between two walls 3A and 4 in the space between the tanks and on the roof 3 of the inner tank, the roof insulation being covered by a gas-tight sheet 8 communicating via a pipe 9 with the outlet 10. Boil-off gas from the tank enters a space 20 between wall 3A and the inner tank, passes through the insulating layer to an outer space 21 and then via passages 5 and a pipe 6 to the outlet 10. Outlets 7 in the inner roof 3 allow boil-off gas to reach the outlet through the roof insulation. Valves 11 in the outlet control the proportions of gas escaping via the roof and side wall insulation. In other embodiments the outer space 21, or both spaces 20, 21, are replaced by porous or perforated non-porous pipes which conduct the gas through the insulating layer at the side walls. Gas warmed by passage through the insulating layer may be used to heat the base of the container to prevent freezing. The inner tank may be strengthened by internal ribs or stiffeners.
