Abstract

1,058,880. Storing liquefied gases. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Dec. 24, 1965 [Dec. 29, 1964], No. 54828/65. Heading F4P. [Also in Division F1] A double-walled heat insulated liquefied gas, e.g. helium, container 10, Fig. 1 (not shown), has connected to the outer portion 17 of a vapour conduit 15 extending from the inner vessel 11 and through the insulation 13 and neck 14 of the outer vessel 12 an external chamber 25 for damping thermally induced pressure oscillations set up by temperature differences between the inner and outer ends of fill and discharge ducts 18, 22; the volume of chamber 25 being greater than 5 c.c. and that of the outer vapour chamber portion 17 and being connected to said portion 17 by a flowrestricting conduit 24 having a length to inner diameter ratio of at least 52 to 1, an inner diameter of at least <SP>1</SP>/ 16 -inch and less than half the internal transverse length of the damper chamber 25. The gas discharge conduit 22 has a relief valve 20 and a bursting disc 21 upstream of: the outlet valve 23. The fill duet 18 may extend through the vapour conduit 15 to form a secondary vapour passage 27 connected by a flow restricting conduit 30 to a secondary damping chamber 31, having a vent valve 32 corresponding to a vent valve 26 on chamber 25. The heat insulation space is evacuated and is charged with alternate layers of paper and radiation-impervious aluminium foil. In a modification the secondary vapour relief path is dispensed with and a removable liquid transfer conduit assembly 35, Fig. 2 (not shown), is provided and is inserted through a wide-opening valve 36.
