Abstract
1378111 Gas storage tank BRIDGESTONE LIQUEFIED GAS CO Ltd 28 Feb 1973 [13 March 1972] 9824/73 Heading F4P A low temperature, liquefied gas tank, e.g. in a tanker ship, comprises a rigid outer vessel 2, an insulating layer 3, e.g. of pearlite concrete, or sulphur, and an inner membraneous vessel 4, e.g. of thin plates of steel or aluminium, the inner vessel 4 being constructed within the outer vessel 2 and then being urged inwardly at its flat side walls by an amount to form sufficient slack corresponding to the contraction of the inner vessel in its low temperature operating condition, the space left between the inner and outer vessels then being filled with heat insulating material to form the layer 3. As shown, the tank has two inner vessel membranes 4, 5, the bottom portions 4a, 5a first being laid on a protecting plate 13a covering insulating layer 12 and scaffolding and jigs then being used to assemble side walls 4b, 5b. A portion of side wall 4b is omitted initially to give access for welding and inspection of both membranes. The top portions 4c, 5c of the membranes are prefabricated with the vessel deck 6, insulating layer 10, protecting plate 13c and membrane supports 9. To provide the required slack in the tops of the membranes the deck assembly may be either suspended higher than its final mounting position while membrane portions 4c, 5c and 4b, 5b are joined, or mounted in its final position with portions 4c, 5c and 4b, 5b overlapping. After assembly of the membranes, protecting plate 13 is urged against side walls 4b, 5b by expansion means 15, e.g. hydraulic jacks, to provide the required slack, and the space between vessel 2 and plate 13 is filled with insulating material, jacks 15 being removed as the insulating layer builds up. The membraneous vessel interior may be pressurized with gas to prevent pushing inwards of its side walls by the insulating material before it sets.
