Abstract

1383869 Cryogenic tanks BRIDGESTONE LIQUEFIED GAS CO Ltd 6 March 1973 [25 March 1972] 10819/73 Heading B7A [Also in Division F4] A method of constructing a cryogenic tank for a tanker comprises the steps of constructing an inner tank assembly 5 composed of inner and outer membrane vessels 9, 8 and a carrying structure 12 therefor, inserting the assembly 5 in a rigid outer hull 1, and filling the space between the side walls of hull 1 and assembly 5 with a heat insulating material 20 while expansion means 21 urge the walls of vessels 8, 9 inwardly so as to create a marginal slack in these vessels to compensate for the contraction that they experience when filled with a cryogenic liquid. The construction site for assembly 5 has a saddle frame 6 and protecting plate 7a laid on a base panel B. Bottom panel members 8a, 9a of vessels 8, 9 are laid on protecting plate 7a which is of plywood. Then sidewall portions 8b, 9b of vessels 8, 9 are supported by scaffolds S and welded to respective bottom plates 8a, 9a. The carrying structure 12 comprises a tank cover 10, a heat insulation 11, a central tubular member 13 connected via flange 14 with roof panels 8c, 9c of vessels 8, 9, and cantilevers 15 extending outwardly from the base of member 13 to support panels 8c, 9c. When it is desired to lift the assembly 5 by crane 18 the saddle frame 6 is suspended from cover 10 by suspension means 16. The assembly 5 is inserted into the hold provided by hull 1 and a protecting plate 7b is laid against the side of vessel 8, hydraulic jacks 21 being then inserted between hull 1 and plate 7b to urge the membrane vessels inwardly by the desired amount, the interior of the vessel being subjected to a pressure to prevent inward collapse of the vessels 8, 9 during the insertion of the heat insulation 20. As the heat insulation is fed into its space each jack 21 is removed when the level of material 20 reaches it and solidifies. Tank cover 10 is fixed to the ship's deck, and in performing this operation the vessels 8, 9 are compressed by an amount corresponding to the contraction when the vessels hold the cryogenic liquid. The insulation may be formed by a bed of foamed sulphur mixed with reinforcing material such as glass wool or pearlite. Pearlite concrete may be used. The vessels 8, 9 are made of nickel steel, stainless steel or aluminium.
