Abstract

1409265 Liquefied gas tanks CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd 21 May 1973 [21 June 1972] 29089/72 Heading F4P A self-supporting tank, e.g. for a liquefied gas marine tanker, comprises vertical walls 5 formed by part-cylindrical sections 7 joined along horizontal lines 8 at which reinforcement plates 9 are attached. An internal partition 10, Fig. 1, has reinforcement girders 11 aligned with and connected to plates 9 at their ends. The top and bottom walls 1, 2 have girders 3 with strengthening plates 4. In Fig. 1A (not shown), wider and shallower sections of greater thickness are used. The tank may be of aluminium alloy or 9% nickel steel. In Fig. 3, the tank is in a ship's hold 14 and has top and bottom walls formed by part-cylindrical sections 7, the bottom wall being supported on a drip tray 20 by girders 18. The tank walls and drip tray bottom are insulated either with fibrous glass with a vinyl or aluminium foil impingement barrier or with polyurethane foam on balsa wood. The tank has part-cylindrical and part-spherical connecting pieces as appropriate at its corners. Three or four-legged extruded metal sections, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), are used for joining sections 7 and girders 9 and 18.
