Abstract

1338757 Cold liquefied gas storage tanks JOHN J McMULLEN ASSOCIATES Inc 27 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971] 3947/72 Heading F4P The inner primary barrier wall 28, Fig. 3, of a, double-walled L.N.G. storage tank has a plurality of outwardly extending webs 38 (only one of which is shown) which serve to support a plurality of heat insulating panels 34, Fig. 6, spaced from wall 28 to form the outer wall which is capable of withstanding the pressure developed in the event of rupture of the inner wall. The latter is of corrugated metal and has a plurality of inwardly extending webs 30 each with a flange 32. Each panel 34 comprises a rigid shell filled with insulating material and has ears 44 along its vertical edges by which spaced adjacent panels are clamped by bolts 46 to a web flange 36; the space between the panels then being filled with insulation pads 40. Attachment of adjacent panels 34 along their horizontal edges is effected by bolts 64, Fig. 9, which project from the upper edge of the lower panel into a recess 62 in the panel above. The junction at four adjacent panels is provided with a spacer block (144), Fig. 15 (not shown), held by a bolt passing through the web flange 36. The assembled panels may be lined externally at 60 to prevent access of water vapour to the space between the primary and secondary barriers.
