Abstract

846,977. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Feb. 6, 1959 [Feb. 7, 1958], No. 4152/58. Class 39(4). In a gas-cooled, graphite moderated nuclear reactor, the pressure vessel inner surface is thermally insulated. A hollow stainless steel base, having a cellular structure is bolted in sections to the vessel inner surface, each cell of the case being filled with graphite particles. Vent holes are provided in the case which permit gas pressure equalisation inside and outside the case but which prevent the escape of the graphite particles. As shown, the upper part of the pressure vessel 10, excluding the control duct 11, is provided with the thermal shields 16A, 16B, 16C, 16D, 23, 25, 40, 41, 43, 50, 51. The shields are secured to the shell by the cellular strips 47, 47<SP>1</SP>, 52 which are engaged by the bolts 31, 48, 54. The vents 18, 19, 33 are formed of a hole in case wall covered by a metal plate welded along one edge. The shields are separated by gaps 44, 45, 46 to allow for thermal expansion.
