Abstract

1449842 Nuclear reactor containments UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 Aug 1974 [20 Sept 1973] 44134/73 Heading G6C In a containment for a sodium-cooled, fast reactor, a prestressed concrete structure 1 is relieved, to form a groove 9 whose width extends across the junction of the structure 1 with a composite concrete-and-steel closure 4, such that, should a pressure and temperature excursion occur, a steel liner 8 (lining the interior of the chamber 6 afforded by the structure 1 and cover 4) expands into the groove 9 to form an annular rib which can deform radially to accommodate differential thermal expansion of the structure 1 and closure 4. The chamber 6 houses a steel primary vessel 7 which is suspended from the closure 4. The closure 4, which is supported on the structure 1 byroller bearings 17, is retained by longitudinal prestressing tendons 11 terminating in a lower gallery 12. The structure 1 is supported on a concrete foundation 13 with the interposition of neoprene pads 14.
