Abstract

1471391 Pressure vessel; thermal insulation COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 14 Feb 1975 [26 Feb 1974] 6431/75 Headings F2P and F2X [Also in Division G6] A shield structure for protecting the metal pressure vessel 2 of a nuclear reactor, e.g. a pressurized water reactor, comprises a concrete vessel 20 prestressed with cables 22, 24 and includes a ring 44 held against the pressure vessel lid 6 by clamping members 46 which engage with an annular member 28 anchored to the ends of cables 22. The pressure vessel 2 fitted with duct nozzle rings 16 may be introduced into the preformed concrete vessel and ducts 18 subsequently welded to the nozzle rings. A protective metal cover for the lid 6 may be provided. As shown in Fig. 2a, the internal walls of the concrete vessel 20 may have a lining providing thermal insulation and protection against impacts comprising stainless steel sheets 52 separated by crossed stainless steel wires which provide air gaps; alternatively the thermal insulation may comprise a layer of cellular concrete.
